Influence of Suspended Mussel Aquaculture and an Associated Invasive Ascidian on Benthic Macroinvertebrate Communities

چکیده

Many benthic macroinvertebrates are associated with cultured bivalves but normally excluded from studies on the environmental effects of bivalve aquacultures. We evaluated hypothesis that mussel aquaculture increases overall “benthic” macroinvertebrate productivity by considering both sediment- and sock-associated macroinvertebrates. It was predicted presence invasive ascidian Styela clava would increase this effect increasing sock’s biogenic structure. Macroinvertebrates in sediments socks were sampled eight bays Prince Edward Island, Canada: three invaded there five where it absent. Infaunal (sediment macroinvertebrates) within leases less abundant relative to control locations outside showed a trend towards decreased biomass productivity. Abundance greater S. than without it. When sediment sock considered together as communities compared leases, abundance, biomass, inside areas them. The did not influence trend. Although ecological role suspended mussels is likely equivalent those sediments, mussels, some measure, offsets impacts at farm-scale.

The impact assessment of cage aquaculture on benthic communities along the south eastern Black Sea

The present study was conducted to examine the impact of cage aquaculture on benthic communities in coastal areas (depth 25 to 50 m) from fish farming operations located along the southeastern Black Sea (Ordu-Perşembe, Trabzon-Yomra and Rize central). Sampling was conducted seasonally from April 2007 to 2009. Sediment samples were taken using Ekman Grab (box core- 0.04 m2). Temperature, salinit...

Influence of Bauxite Tailings on the Structure of the Benthic Macroinvertebrate Community in an Amazonian Lake

This research was developed between 1993 and 1996, aiming to study the structure of the benthic macroinvertebrate community, relating it to some abiotic variables, in an amazonian lake (lago Batata), that received for ten years a great amount of bauxite tailings. The benthic macroinvertebrates were collected with a core and the abiotic variables that were measured were: dissolved oxygen, suspen...

Benthic Macroinvertebrate/ Water Quality

The Ecology contribution to address this question is to determine possible physicochemical impacts on 1) pond water quality and biological integrity, and 2) avulsed pit pond water quality and biological integrity in the historical pit location and receiving waters. These questions will be addressed by all study partners together in a more comprehensive fashion after the interim phase of reporting.
